Historic Wood Window & Door Restoration

Windows of the Past restores and repairs historic wood windows and doors with an emphasis on preserving original materials whenever practical.

Every project begins with the condition of the existing window or door — not with the assumption that it should be replaced.

Full Window Restoration

For windows that need more than a tune-up, full restoration may include:

  • Careful sash removal
  • Paint removal and surface preparation
  • Wood repair
  • Reglazing
  • Preservation of original glass where possible
  • Sash cord or chain replacement
  • Pulley and weight service
  • Hardware cleaning and repair
  • Weatherization
  • Priming, painting, and finishing
  • Reinstallation and operational adjustment

The goal is to return the window to safe, functional use while preserving as much original material as possible.

Repair & Tune-Up Services

Not every window needs a complete restoration.

Smaller services may include:

  • Sticking or painted-shut windows
  • Broken sash cords
  • Loose or missing glazing
  • Hardware adjustment
  • Lock and fastener repair
  • Weatherstripping
  • Pulley service
  • Minor wood repairs
  • Operational adjustments
  • Reinstallation of loose or removed components

Sometimes a relatively small repair can make a major difference in how an old window performs.

Historic Glass & Glazing

Old glass is part of the character of a historic window.

When practical, we preserve original glass and reglaze it using traditional methods appropriate to the window.

Replacement glass can also be installed when original panes are broken or missing.

Wood Repair

Localized deterioration does not always mean an entire sash, sill, or frame needs to be replaced.

Depending on condition, repairs may include:

  • Consolidation of sound surrounding wood
  • Epoxy repair
  • Dutchman or localized wood replacement
  • Sill and trim repair
  • Minor frame repair

Each repair is evaluated individually.

Hardware Restoration

Original window and door hardware often survives long after finishes and paint have failed.

We can clean, repair, adjust, and return suitable original hardware to service whenever practical.

Historic Wood Door Restoration

Windows of the Past also restores and repairs historic wood doors, including:

  • Surface preparation
  • Wood repair
  • Hardware restoration
  • Glass and glazing work
  • Operational adjustment
  • Weatherization
  • Finishing and reinstallation

Removal & Reinstallation

For restoration projects, we can remove sash or other components from the property, complete restoration work in the shop, and return them for reinstallation.

Customer assessments and measurements are performed at the property so we can evaluate the existing conditions before work begins.

Not Sure What Your Window Needs?

That is completely normal.

Many old windows look worse than they actually are.

Before replacing them, we can evaluate their condition and help determine whether repair, partial restoration, or full restoration makes sense.

The first question is always: Can it be saved?
